Locate foot. Aim. Shoot.

What do you know?

Dearth of teacher librarians poses new challenge to Common Core transition: Districts that slashed jobs for teacher librarians in recent years may soon regret that decision – especially as schools in California transition to the Common Core standards, which put new emphasis on students developing good research skills.

Saddest thing about that article is how little it says about libraries and simple reading for pleasure.

  1. Face it; libraries are sooo 1990. Who cares that the Library at Alexandria burned down? What does it matter that the Spanish purged the pre- Columbian libraries? I’ve got the entirety of human knowledge right here in my pocket on my smart phone… even the Archimedes palimpsest!

In five years, the words “school library” will be synonymous with “testing center”, and that’s the way it should be. Libraries belong in the same dustbin as film strips and cassette recordings and Bakelite telephones. They are doddering old fools as radioactive as glowing watch faces and red Fiesta-ware. Libraries are moldering newsprint, microfiche, and silverfish. Make way for our glorious future! Excelsior!
